Creating a 5-year plan involves setting yourself goals that would help improve your overall wellbeing.

One of the most important lessons I have learned in life as part of my personal development is that some goals can easily be achieved and others can take a long time.

Personal development is about improving yourself. It involves activities that can help improve your skills, knowledge, identity and enhance your quality of life.

Prior to creating a 5-year plan, it was hard for me to give up on my idea around the fact that the organisation I work for was responsible for my personal growth.

It took a while for me to acknowledge that the key to my personal growth is for me to start that process of change, take charge and do something different myself.

To become the person I want to become, I needed to change what was inside me in order to change what is on the outside.

I started listening to audio books, podcasts and reading books about personal development and success.

Then, I changed my mindset, and my world started to change!

As an important form of self-care, a personal development plan is a wonderful and positive way to improve yourself both mentally and physically.

Rather than go through life with regrets and feeling negative about what life has thrown your way, it’s time to take control of your journey and make the most of your life, whether it be by setting your sights on a new and exciting career, establishing a set of personal life goals that you hope to achieve in the next 5 years, or working on your mental and physical health.

Do you give yourself time regularly to broaden your horizons and learn more about the world around you?

To improve we need to nourish the mind with education.

Hormones can affect our mood and happiness greatly, and being emotionally intelligent means being fully aware of what can affect our emotions, whether it be hormones, people around us or unpleasant experiences.

Emotional intelligence will help you control your mood swings and overcome negative thoughts which can hold you back in life.

From stress and a lack of sleep to negative people and toxic environments, there is a lot to be discovered when you invest time in self-care, self-love and develop your emotional intelligence.

The mind is incredibly powerful when it comes to self-healing and happiness. Be true to yourself and ask yourself questions.

I have always felt health comes first as without health, it can often be difficult to enjoy life and achieve your goals.

Even at a young age, with no health problems, you must invest in your physical health by eating a balanced, healthy diet, reducing toxins in the body and removing as much stress as you can from your life.

Prevention is better than a cure, so you must incorporate physical goals into your personal development plan and reap the benefits of being fit and healthy for as long as possible.

5. Relationships

We are naturally social creatures, and the people we spend time with and care about play a significant role in our lives and can affect our overall sense of happiness and fulfilment.

Do you feel lonely in your life?

When you spend time with friends and family do you feel your energy drained, or do they uplift you?

It’s important to pay close attention to those we spend time with regularly, as the saying goes; you are the average of the 5 people you surround yourself with.

When your mindset is totally settled, and you understand what your goals are, that is when you will have a plan that will work.

Yes, when you take action, you may be afraid or even worse, fail to crush your goals but REMEMBER, when your back is to the wall and you are facing fear head on, the only way is forward is through it. 

When defeat comes, accept it as a signal that your plans are not sound, rebuild those plans, and set sail once more toward your coveted goal.

Be realistic in what you want to do in the next few years, and the time you’re going to give yourself to grow and develop as a person.

Understand that the struggle is part of the journey ahead and not reaching your goals is OK.

A personal development journey is never set in stone and can be adapted and changed as your progress.

The beauty of a self-development plan is that you can create your own opportunities in life, rather than wait for life to give you a chance. 

By focusing your mind and energy on what you want from your life, you will be subconsciously deciding daily the help you need to move you a step closer to your dreams and ambitions.

To create a 5-year personal development plan first, you need to paint a picture. No, I don’t mean get out the watercolours and a blank canvas, but you need to picture in-detail the person you are in 5 years’ time. Ask yourself the following questions and be honest with yourself.

Q: Where are you?

Q: Where do you want to be?

Q: What does the room you’re in look like?

Q: What country are you in?

Q: Who are you with? Are you married? Do you have children? Are you single? Are you with friends? Are you with family?

Q: What are you going to eat for breakfast?

Q: What are you doing or going to do that day?

Q: How do you feel? Emotionally and physically?

Q: What do you do to make money?

Q: What brings you joy?

Q: What have you achieved so far?

    I have never had a more extended plan than one year before, but as I read your article, it motivates me to try to create a more comprehensive list.
