Life can throw lemons at us; however, we can turn them into something much tastier like a vintage lemonade or something much more desirable :).
More often than I can remember, and especially in recent months, I have felt fed up in life and irritate, however; I have learned to be my own therapist, tried to remove negative thoughts and add positivism in my day.
This is because, I realised that negativity beats down my self-esteem. To help overcome negativity, I incorporated several changes in my life. For instance, I started free – writing and focusing on words of encouragement to reduce stress.
So, what is stress?
Stress is the emotional and physical response displayed by the body when the perceived pressure exceeds your perceived ability to cope.

Words of Encouragement to Reduce Stress

If you feel you cannot cope with the pressures and situations you are experiencing, then you probably may be stressed.
Stress plays a major part in our overall sense of health and wellbeing. At a basic level, the body reacts to pressures from situations which causes demand or threat to the body. The body then produces what is called a stress response.
Understanding Stress Response
According to Matta (2012), a stress response is the body’s own way of reacting quickly to early signs of stress. It does this to protect you by giving you an early signal that something is not right. When ignored, it can lead to chronic stress which can cause havoc on your mind and body.
Undoubtedly, you face multiple demands each day, such as working on a large caseload, dealing with challenging situations, attending court hearings especially in child protection cases, facing financial difficulties, and taking care of your family. Yet, sometimes it can still be difficult to reflect and understand why you’re experiencing stress in your life.
If you feel depressed, anxious or you stress out over the smallest thing, you need to address this. Stress over time, can contribute to serious health problems and cause mental disorders among other illnesses, therefore it is important to tackle it as soon as possible.
The first step towards managing stress is to recognise the warning signs that our body and mind sends us. Look out for the following common symptoms of stress in yourself and your friends, family and colleagues:⠀
- Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, depressed or tense⠀
- Struggling to concentrate
- Worrying excessively⠀
- Trouble sleeping⠀
- Self – neglecting
- Headaches and dizziness⠀
- Changes in behaviour
- Changes in appetite
- Becoming withdrawn
By practicing the art of self-love, you can overcome symptoms associated with stress or anxiety and lead a better and healthier life.
So, what is self-love?
What is Self-Love?
Have you ever thought about what self-love is?
Well, it is the ability to identify and prioritise your happiness and wellbeing in everything you do.
Due to the frantic world we live in now, it is easy to neglect self-love and this can lead to bad outcomes such as anxiety. We are responsible for our own happiness and we learn to love ourselves before we can open up to receiving love from others.
You must not associate worth, happiness and success with family, friends or anyone else. Having a positive attitude involves practicing self-love. Respecting yourself, knowing your worth and appreciating your imperfections. You are unique, beautiful and worthy of love, respect and success but only if you believe this and treat yourself well, will the universe help you to experience this in your life.
Self-love can be simply running yourself a bubble bath and pampering yourself, treating yourself to a little reward after working hard, or smiling at your reflection in the morning and appreciating yourself and your body.
Words that Encourage
Words can have a powerful impact on your self-esteem and mindset. I am sure we have all heard the saying that “sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me”. Contrary to this saying, words are powerful and they do hurt the way you feel. Do you agree? Kindly share your thoughts in the comments section below.
When faced with pressures or failures in life, some positive words of encouragement can help uplift your personal energy. If you use positive words to describe yourself and your abilities, then that is what you are likely to become. This does not mean you should ignore reality; however, positive language affects the way we react and respond to obstacles we face in real life. Positive words expressed with sincere intent will have the power to improve your self-esteem and mindset.
Words of encouragement are often a powerful way to remind yourself to practice self-love, stop stressing out and be kind, considerate and patient with yourself.
Words of Encouragement to Uplift You
Here is a daily mantra to practice self-love at home and reduce stress:
- I am strong, powerful and capable.
- I can achieve anything I set my mind towards.
- I have everything I need to succeed.
- I am loved, I can love and I love myself.
- I am a positive person.
- I am a go getter.
- I find opportunity in any difficulty.
- I am who I am, I love the light for it shows me the way, yet I will endure the darkness because it shows me the stars.
- I may be faced with tough situations in this frantic world yet, 1 will come out even stronger and better.
- I keep my attitude and outlook positive.
- I have one life to live; one life I can never have back, so I will embrace it while I still can and live!
A Letter of Self Love
Hello you,
How wonderful it truly is to be speaking to you. An inspiration to many, who is yet to understand their power and influence in this world. For you are remarkable, and a creature of beauty and intelligence. You can overcome anything in your path. With each breath you take, your energy is renewed and you become wiser.
One of life’s incredible gifts, you can change, transform, and to adapt. Whatever life throws your way, you rise like a phoenix from the fire, stronger than ever. Hold your head up and stand tall because people are watching. It is your responsibility to lead by example. To trust in your own mind and heart and live life in a way that brings you joy.
When your mood dips and your confidence is knocked, remember these words of encouragement. Life is a challenge and there will be plenty of hurdles along the way to test your resilience. The beauty of life is that nothing lasts forever. As a flower grows, blooms and wilts, you too will enjoy moments of happiness, sadness and difficulty, but everything will pass. So, live in the here and now, make the most of each and every moment, because life is a gift.
Practice self-love and be kind to yourself, your family and your friends. Respect the planet and care for animals. Be patient, appreciate what you have. Set your goals, but don’t be down if you fail to achieve them. It simply means you may not on the right path in life.
Listen intently to your inner thoughts, that voice deep inside, and let it guide you. Have faith that everything in life happens for a reason.
Take a deep breath in and slowly out. Whatever it is, I know you can do this. A few days, weeks, months and years from now, you will look back and smile, knowing that everything turned out fine.
So, be free, be happy and smile, for nothing is for certain and life is to be enjoyed.
You are beautiful and capable. Others may see you as different but love yourself, anyway. Keep growing, and you will become a better version of yourself. Change from the outside can only start from within. Love yourself the way you are.
With admiration, respect, and love,
Yours, truly
xoxoxo

Thank you so much for this article! I too, talk to my clients about self-love and self-care. It is such an important part of coping with anxiety. I have struggled with depression my whole life, and before I started using techniques like self-love and positive thinking, I was so full of anxiety that I barely left the house. I wish I had this article at my disposal back then.
Worth sharing with others!
Thanks again.
Hello Darcy, happy you found this useful 🙂
This is a wonderful post and I’m so glad that I’ve come across it! Self-love is extremely important and its sometimes difficult to love yourself when you’re constantly stressed. I love how you wrote about what stress is and different ways to cope with it through self-love! Keep up the good work and I wish you nothing, but success!
Thank you Aminah. Stress can take the need for self love away. I practice self love in the form of meditation first thing in the morning so it comes before anything else 🙂
This is an amazing and highly encouraging post about positivity and self love. I enjoyed the read thoroughly. There is so much we can do to uplift us, but we don’t because we are naturally designed to react to fears which we think will help us stay safe. Once we go in the fight or fight mode we tend to keep going there and getting there gets easier and easier. So, we end up being in a loop-hole.
Your motivational post will help us break the chain of this behaviour and promote more self love and understanding about us.
Thank you
Glad you found this post useful Habib.
Thank you for this article
I normally say mantras in the morning however recently I have kind of gotten lazy to do this. Do you know how I can keep up this habit daily so I can be able to do anything I want.
Keeping a journal does it for me Thabo. Give it a try and let me know how it goes?
